Linking FrameMaker 9 in RoboHelp 8 session: New Time

For those of you who were looking forward to last week’s (4/24) session on "Dynamically Linking FrameMaker 9 Files in RoboHelp 8 in Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2," unfortunately I had to postpone due health issues, so here’s take 2.

When: Friday, May 1, 2009 at 10:00am Pacific Time.

Registration: No registration required.

Login instructions: Click the link above as early as 30 minutes before the start time, enter as Guest, type your Full Name (do not type Guest as the name) and click Enter Room.  For the audio portion of the meeting, you will need to turn on your computer speakers and adjust the volume appropriately.  I will conduct a series of audio tests as participants begin to join.

Click here to make sure your system is properly configured to participate in this eLearning session via Acrobat Connect Pro.

Duration: 90 – 120 minutes, with a 15-minute break in between.

For an agenda and complete details, check out the original post on this session, by clicking here.

In the meantime, here’s a short Captivate simulation, that I recommend you go through in preparation for Friday’s session. The simulation walks you through the overall steps for linking FrameMaker files in RoboHelp, as well as it guides you through how to display the Project Settings and other key dialog boxes:

After watching the video (thanks!), here are my initial questions for tomorrow:- What if when I import a FM book I don’t get the happy green recycle symbol on my FM book, but instead get the exclamation triangles as on the .fm files?- Why don’t you have to update files before generating book?- Why are the .htm files displayed with question mark document symbols? Thanks!Callie

  • Hi Calllie, thanks for your comment and these are questions I will answer tomorrow during our session, hopefully I’ll see you there. In the meantime, here are short answers to your questions:1) If you don’t see the “happy green recycle” symbol, it’s because you “imported” FrameMaker documents and not “linked” which is much better. Of course you need the Tech Comm Suite 2 for this option to be available.2) You should always update your FrameMaker files, including TOC and Index if you work with a book. This was a short simulation, so I didn’t have time to add more slides.3) This is a standard icon we use in RoboHelp to symbolize a “Help” topic and thus the question mark.See you tomorrow and thanks again.RJ Jacquez

Hi RJ,After watching your presentation, I have a couple questions about mapping FrameMaker autonumber formats to HTML lists in RoboHelp.1.I have a framemaker style called Numbered. If I map it to an HTML list, RoboHelp fails to account for the reset counter in FrameMaker. So instead of having multiple ordered lists, I have one long ordered listed. How do you set up the numbering so RH will read the reset counter?2. I have autonumber formats that use text, such as note and warning. If I convert them to text in RoboHelp, the indenting and alignment are all messed up. Is there a workaround for this?3. Is there a way to successfully map FrameMaker autonumber formats to RoboHelp Multilevel lists? I haven’t been able to get this to work.

How do I become a member to be part of the live clases? Is there a cost?

  • Hi Sarah, thanks for your comment and there’s absolutely no charge to attend these sessions. I started doing these as a way of helping our customers “get started” with our products and will continue doing more as time permits.
